Martha’s Rule Interactive Workshop

A 2 hour virtual interactive workshop supporting healthcare teams to embed the principles of Martha's Rule with care and confidence.

Martha’s Rule is being piloted across the NHS following the death of Martha Mills, aged 13, from sepsis in 2021.  It is a major patient safety initiative providing patients and families with a way to seek an urgent review if they or their loved one’s condition deteriorates and they are concerned this is not being responded to.

But it can sometimes be difficult to know when a parent or patient is seriously worried.

They may express their worry in different ways. They may not find the words to say what’s worrying them. Our 2 hour interactive workshop will provide you with the skills to recognise and acknowledge parental concerns and the confidence to manage your own responses if a parent or family member is angry or upset.

Listening to understand isn’t always easy.

This workshop will support you to do it well in a high pressure, time-limited clinical environment.

Course content:

  • What is a parental concern and how to respond
  • Key skills for acknowledging and responding to a parent or family member who is angry, frightened and/ or upset
  • How to listen to understand, not to challenge or fix
  • How to understand and manage your own responses in difficult situations

I found this (workshop) so extremely helpful.  I feel more confident in identifying cues and addressing concerns more head on, as opposed to just apologising for what I may not understandStaff nurse, Evelina, London
